Field Trips
Join us on a field trip. All are welcome, whether this is your first time out with binoculars or you've been birding for years.
We focus on local birding areas around the Conejo Valley and Ventura/Los Angeles counties at large. Most trips start at 8 a.m. on Saturdays and last 2-3 hours, but some trips are full-day and may involve carpooling. Occasionally, we do special multi-day trips out-of-state or even out-of-country.
Each trip is listed individually on our Events Calendar, with its own date, meeting location, and details. Check the listing for a specific trip before you go.
For more on the destinations we visit, see Location Details.
Skill Level
Birders of any skill level are welcome on any and every trip, and we do have a recurring trip every month at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa for beginner birders.
Some trips may involve more walking on uneven terrain and/or exposure to harsher environmental conditions (e.g. elevation, heat, sun, etc.). Such factors will be noted in the trip description when relevant.
What to Bring
- Binoculars, if you have them
- Water and snacks
- Sun protection, including a hat
- Closed-toe walking shoes
- Layers, since weather changes over the course of a day trip
- A field guide or bird app, if you use one
Some destinations call for specific gear (spotting scopes, headlamps, etc.). Any trip that needs something beyond the basics will say so in the listing.
Carpooling
For trips that require carpooling, the meeting location and time will be detailed in the trip description.
Signing Up
Please RSVP through the trip's listing on our Events Calendar. We utilize Mobilize to gather RSVPs, send reminders, and communicate any updates.
Some trips have limited space, so sign up early. If a trip requires a fee (park entrance, permit, etc.), that will be noted in the listing.
Weather and Cancellations
Light rain usually isn't enough to cancel a trip. Heavier rain is. If a trip is cancelled, this will be reflected on the website. If you have directly expressed interest, you will receive a direct message (email, text, call, etc.) confirming the trip is cancelled.
