SUMMARY:January-How Does a Songbird Learn to Sing
DESCRIPTION:How Does a Songbird Learn to Sing? \n\n\n\nEspecially when he’s a cowbird who has never met his parent?\n\n\n\nSteve Rothstein will discuss generalizations regarding how songbirds learn their vocalizations as well as some exceptions to those generalizations. He will also discuss cowbirds and what’s known about their vocal development and how both innate and genetic aspects combine with learning to produce vocal repertoires. \n\n\n\nSteve Rothstein is a Research Professor\, Professor Emeritus of Zoology\, Department of Ecology\, Evolution & Marine Biology\, at UC Santa Barbara. \n\n\n\nSEE PROGRAMS PAGE

SUMMARY:February Program-California Walnut Woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Community: California Walnut Woodlands\n\n\n\nThe Ecological Significant to Avifuana\n\n\n\nChanges in land use following Euro-American colonization resulted in the severe reduction of the endemic Southern California black walnut (Juglans californica) and its woodland habitat. Natasha Khanna-Dang studied the availability of trees and large shrubs and feeding behavior of birds in eight patches of California walnut woodland in Los Angeles County during the breeding and nonbreeding periods of 2023. Natasha will join CVAS’s monthly meeting via Zoom to discuss the findings on the importance of these woodlands to the larger ecosystem and will discuss how ecological research can intersect with both conservation and social justice issues. \n\n\n\nNatasha Khanna-Dang works as an urban conservation biologist based out of Los Angeles\, California. They completed their Master of Science degree in Environmental Science at California State University\, Los Angeles in 2024.Natasha is also an environmental educator and believes in the importance of intersectional ecology – ecological research that intersects with issues of environmental and social justice. \n\n\n\nSEE PROGRAMS PAGE

SUMMARY:October Program: 47 Years of Bald Eagle Recovery on the California Channel Islands
DESCRIPTION:Bald eagles were historically present on all eight California Channel Islands\, but by 1960\, exposure to the pesticide DDT led to their decline and disappearance. In 1980\, a team of wildlife biologists with the Institute for Wildlife Studies initiated the Bald Eagle Restoration Project\, an intensive reintroduction and management effort that has spanned 45 years and counting. Thanks to these efforts\, bald eagles can once again be seen soaring along island coastlines and nesting on cliffs and in treetops across the archipelago. \n\n\n\nToday\, the Bald Eagle Restoration Project monitors breeding bald eagles on the Channel Islands to detect and remedy any future population declines. Nest monitoring helps us to understand the reasons behind individual nest successes and contributes to invaluable long-term studies. Challenges remain\, with some pairs continuing to have failed nests. Ongoing monitoring\, livestreams\, social media outreach\, and educational programming increase public awareness and support of programs that protect bald eagles' ongoing recovery. \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker Erin Weiner is a wildlife ecologist and the Eagle Project Lead for the Institute for Wildlife Studies. \n\n\n\nShe will be joining this month’s program via Zoom. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Western Foundation! \n\n\n\nWe have the privilege of holding our meetings at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (also known as the Bird Museum)\, 439 Calle San Pablo in Camarillo. SUMMARY:November Program: Birding the Bottom of the World\, David Pereksta
DESCRIPTION:Birding the Bottom of the World: a Bucket List Trip to Tierra del Fuego\, the Falkland Islands\, South Georgia\, and Antarctica \n\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: November’s meeting will be in-person only! We will not be streaming the meeting over Zoom. We want to see your faces! Join us at the Western Foundation (details below). \n\n\n\nAntarctica is a destination that is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. The South Polar region; including Antarctica\, the Subantarctic islands\, and the Southern Ocean; is one of the most remote places on earth and its jaw-dropping landscapes (and seascapes) host incredible numbers of marine birds and mammals. However\, the travel season there is restrictive\, trips are pricey\, and sea conditions can change a trip’s itinerary at a moment’s notice. Travelers to this region assume a number of risks and uncertainties\, but there is no other place on earth that offers the awe-inspiring experiences to be found there. \n\n\n\nDavid Pereksta decided to finally add this destination to his bucket and recently made the trek to Tierra del Fuego\, Antarctica\, South Georgia\, and the Falkland Islands. Tonight\, he will share that experience\, including highlighting the wildlife that can be found there\, and provide insights on how to plan your own Antarctic adventure. If Antarctica is on your bucket list\, or you want to live vicariously through David’s experience there\, you will not want to miss this presentation. David is an internationally recognized birder and wildlife photographer\, and his presentation will be full of stunning images from this trip of a lifetime. \n\n\n\nDavid Pereksta is an Avian Biologist with the Marine Minerals Administration\, where he studies and analyzes the effects of offshore energy development on birds off the Pacific coast\, Hawaii\, and the US territories in the Pacific. Prior to his position at MMA\, Dave spent 16 years workingon endangered species issues with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Ventura. Throughout his 40-year career with various Federal and State agencies\, he has studied several imperiled bird species including Snowy Plovers\, Piping Plovers\, Least Terns\, Ospreys\, Northern Goshawks\,Brown Pelicans\, Spotted Owls\, Marbled Murrelets\, and Ivory-billed Woodpeckers. \n\n\n\nAn avid birder for over 50 years\, Dave’s travels have taken him to remote and little visited parts of North America\, Mexico\, Central and South America\, the Caribbean\, the Tropical Pacific\, the Russian Far East\, Europe\, and Antarctica. He has led trips to Mexico\, Belize\, Costa Rica\, Peru\, Chile\, Argentina\, and Antarctica as well as hundreds of pelagic trips in the Pacific and Atlantic. He has seen nearly 2\,600 species of birds in his travels; photographing 2\,000 species along the way. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Western Foundation! \n\n\n\nWe have the privilege of holding our meetings at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (also known as the Bird Museum)\, 439 Calle San Pablo in Camarillo.
